The Miracle Worker, by William Gibson, was designated the state outdoor drama of Alabama in 1991. The play tells the story of Helen Keller's early life as a deaf mute and her teacher Anne Sullivan. The first production of the drama was performed on the grounds of Ivy Green in 1962.
Ivy Green is the birthplace of Helen Keller (1880–1968, U.S. lecturer, author, and educator), located on a 640 acre tract in historic Tuscumbia, Alabama. The home (built in 1820 by Helen Keller's grandfather David Keller and listed on the national register of historic places) and museum rooms are decorated with much of the original furniture of the Keller family.
There is an annual week-long Helen Keller Festival in Tuscumbia each June. Visitors can enjoy a parade through downtown, stage entertainment, arts and crafts, an art auction, puppet shows, tour of historic sites, sports tournaments, and athletic events. This festival marks the beginning of the outdoor performances of The Miracle Worker (performed each summer from the end of June through July on the Ivy Green grounds).
